운반상자들이 등장하면서 주류가 술의 종류를 뜻하는 주류(酒類)가 아닌가고 고개가 갸웃해진다. 주류 앞에 비(非)가 서니, 이제는 다시 주류가 아니라는 의미로 바뀌다가 쌍점을 의식하는 순간 비(非)는 주류와 등가를 이루는 알 수 없는 무엇으로 바뀐다. 프랑스의 예술학교(Haute école des arts du rhin)에서 순수미술을 전공하고, 마르세유와 대전에서 3번의 개인전을 열었으나 아직 국내에 잘 알려지지 않았다는 점에서 작가 자신도 ‘비주류’다. 작업노트에는, 제일 먼저 ‘술 짝’이라는 단어가 등장한다. 술을 운반하기 쉽게 담아 둔 주류상자를 일컫는 주류 운반업계 현장의 말이다. 술 짝은, 마치 관용어로 쓰일 때의 짐짝을 연상시킨다. 방해되어서 덜어버리고 싶은 대상이다. 그러나 그럴 수 없다. 작가에게 술 짝을 나르는 일은, 예술활동을 지속하기 위해서 병행해야만 하는 생업활동이기 때문이다. 김기훈의 &lt;&lt;비:주류&gt;&gt;는 ‘예술적 노동과 경제적 노동 사이의 균형은 가능한가?’라는 질문에서 시작한 사진 시리즈다. 작가는 지난 1여 년간 주 4일 고용조건으로 주류 유통업에 종사하며, 나머지 3일은 작업과 기획 등의 예술 활동을 해왔다. “처음에는 시간과 에너지를 잘 분배하면 될 문제라고 생각했습니다. 정신노동과 육체노동의 안배도 적절해 보였고요. 하지만 둘 사이에서 균형을 잡기란 쉽지 않았습니다. 노동의 강도는 너무 강했고, 육체적 피로 때문에 머리 쓰는 일조차 벅찼어요.” 균형을 찾기보다 예술 활동과 노동의 균형이 어긋나는 지점을 관찰하기 시작한 것이 그때부터다. 무거운 술 짝들을 등에 지고 옮기다가 손과 팔, 다리에 생긴 상처와 그 흔적을 폴라로이드 카메라로 촬영했다. 그것이 &lt;&lt;비:주류&gt;&gt;의 일부분인 &lt;영광&gt;이다. &lt;주4일제&gt;에는 차곡차곡 쌓인 술 짝 너머로 먼 풍경을 바라보는 작가의 시선이 담겨있다. 희미한 근거리의 풍경과 선명한 먼 곳의 풍경이 예술과 생업의 관계처럼 대척을 이룬다. 유일한 흑백사진인 &lt;누가 웅덩이에 자갈을 채웠는가&gt;는 주류 유통회사 입구의 포장도로와 비포장도로의 경계를 찍은 것이다. 작가에게 이곳은 예술가와 주류 유통업자 사이를 오가는 통로이자 관문이다. 배경을 알기 전까지 언뜻 밋밋하고 고요해 보이는 사진들은, 추상적인 개념이 아니라 작가 자신이 처한 리얼리티를 고스란히 담고 있다. 평론가 행위와 떼는 행위가 반복되어 남겨진 수십 개의 테이프 자국. 작가에게 이 자국은 어느 꼭짓점을 네 변으로 이어도 한 비어있는 공간으로 인식될 뿐이었다. 수많은 정보와 행위들이 겹겹이 쌓이고, 또 뜯겨 만들어진 이 흔적은 비로소 부재의 공간 그리고 빈 공간이 되었다. 비로소 쉬고 있다. 무엇이 있었던 자리. 무엇이 지나간 자리. 그 뒤에는 수많은 시간과 행위를 붙들었던 끈적끈적한 테이프만이 남아있다. 이 테이프는 빈 공간의 표시이다. 이 끈적한 자국은 드디어 숨통을 트였다는 듯, 덕지덕지 남겨진 흔적들 사이를 비집고 사유의 공간을 만들어 낸다. 와르르 쏟아지는 수많은 정보는 빗살같이 지나가고, 때마침 사유의 시간을 마주한다. 하지만, 이마저도 지금은 생경한 풍경이 되고 있다. 빅데이터와 같은 정보홍수에 https://gihoonkim.com/22885733 아무것도 없지 않은 황량한 장소 사진 설치, 가변크기, 2021 &lt;아무것도 없지 않은 황량한 장소&gt;는 미학에 대한 나의 관점을 관찰할 수 있는 방식이자 내가 정의 할 수 있는 시각적 미학의 한계에 대한 고백이다. 일상에서 가끔 본능적으로 나를 멈추게하는 풍경이 있다. 나는 이 풍경을 감상하고 나서 직관적이고 본능적으로 사진을 찍는다. 그러나 사진은 중립적이고 나의 감상은 부재한다. 감상을 통해 촬영된 사진에는 무엇이 남았을까? 어쩌면 사진에 있는 잔여물이야말로 내가 가진 시각의 미학을 규정할 수 있지 않을까? 이 질문에 나는 촬영된 사진을 재구성하고자 하는 욕구가 일었다. 이 조형물은 내 시각의 미학적 증거물로써 등장한다. 이 것들에는 규정하기 어려운 균형, 비례, 질서 같은 것들을 공통적으로 가지고 있다. 사진 기둥은 단단하게 중심을 잡고 있는 것 처럼 보이지만 실제로는 얇은 종이로 이루어져 툭 치면 금세 울렁거리면서 쓰러질 수도 있다. 견고해보이면서도 사진의 가벼운 속성을 긴장 관계 속에서 하나의 독립된 형태로 연출했다.
